After Implantation.. The healing process.. I urge everyone to use these headphones.
I know what everyone hears and yes it is a big learning curve and many trips to the audiologist but as far as the first two weeks after surgury is concerned, these headphones, I see the biggest need for them for the first two weeks. I can't make a medical claim but I know what happens when these are worn the first two weeks after the surgery.
The rehabilitation period can be long or shorter but if the voltage of the area of the surgery is higher (not from high sustained magnetic gauss that can be worse than an MRI should be something people should research. The stories I hear from parents with their childs 2nd implant using the headphones and the way their 2nd implant responds are always the same stories. If the auditory nerve would have needed a higher voltage to heal and the headphones weren’t used, you can’t go back and do it over. I believe keeping the voltage high will cause less scar tissue and is something many parents may regret not using after their implant. There are many factors that cause a slow healing or chance someone will be in that .05% that needs re-implantation and I believe the headphones will bring that much lower than .05%
Failure rates
Right now its is about .05% which is about 1 in every 200 implants there is a problem. This is a conversation that needs to be addressed based on the person. If not addressed and questions that should be asked are not answered and the answers are not from a sales pitch, then the person will have a better chance of not being that 1 in 200 person that needs to get re-implanted. Half the time it can be because of the person’s anatomy (their auditory nerve, etc) and the other half which is equipment failure. Some implants work better with certain anatomy which is something I am researching more to find out why the rare person needs to be re-implanted and what their reason is. Oh, and so far, it has never been an equipment failure which seems very odd to me. I will be making a new site soon interviewing cochlear implant surgeons to make sure they answer most of the questions I have. Every person I talk to says go to this doctor… he has the most experience and is the best. That is just not good enough for me. That is not true research just because someone says someone is good. Wait till my new site on implant doctors comes out. I wouldn’t be surprised if people fly across the country to get implanted once my new research comes out. See my page on failure rates.
Warranty types.
Some have 5 year warranties and some have 3 year warranties. This may seem odd but the ones that have 5 year warranties I have researched will cost way more in the long run with repairs, replacement parts and all the problems after that 5 year warranty. See my warranty page
Rehabilitation period: I urge people to use the headphones for at least 6 months while the implant is healing - auditory nerve, scar tissue on the cochlea. It is not always a mechanical problem but the healing process with some people is slower than others. I again urge people to research the headphones that many people use.
The better the implant heals with less scar tissue I have researched that the more natural the sound will be and less possibility of any ringing in the ears or any other things people complain about to me from a non successful healing situation. Please see my Cochlear implant buyers guide page.
I found this picture and is probably the best picture that I found that shows the hair cells in the cochlea. I urge people to make sure their electrode is the latest generation as they should be softer and will not rub the hair cells and kill them off. Imagine the older type that were like a razor blade that shaved the residual hearing away. I also want to make sure people know that after surgery maybe there could be some damage to the hair cells that are still alive but on the verge of dying. I cannot express in words how important the Sony headphones are that are normally sold to people with tinnitus before I ever heard about people using them who have cochlear implants. I can't make a claim on the headphones as any thing I would say would be "off label", but if I knew something could raise the voltage and partial o2 pressure of anything that could help the healing process.... I will leave it at that.
